‘A word from our Managing Director, Toby Walzer’

After eight years in corporate business, it occurred to me that my working life was definitely not tasty…………………and  I didn’t know it, but the solution was sitting in my fridge!

Since my early childhood I have always eaten a lot of houmous. It is after all, a delicious and exceptionally versatile food, and for me, there is never a bad time to eat it (including breakfast!). My travels in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, America, and around the UK, showed me that there is a massive variety in quality, taste, and texture of houmous, and with it a whole world of fun, discussion, history, and cuisine, all built around this simple food and the humble chickpea. Everyone I spoke to said the same thing to me – ‘We love houmous!’. My goal became clear – to produce and provide a truly great authentic houmous that was true to its origins, and that sets the benchmark for how houmous should be.

The more I learnt about the houmous industry and how houmous is mass produced, the more disappointed I became. For every aspect of authentic houmous production there is also a mechanical shortcut or modern substitute ingredient to choose from. And after each suggested compromise, it seemed to me that the product deteriorates until you are left with just a mere impersonation of what proper houmous should be.

At Saz we resolved to do things differently. To produce a houmous that would not compromise on traditional technique or the quality of ingredients. An all natural, handmade, authentic houmous that existing houmous lovers would desire because it is quite simply a better product. A houmous that would encourage the as yet uninitiated to try it, and be instantly converted for one reason only – it tastes great.

After a lot of discussion (and obligatory houmous eating) our product and ethos took shape:-

Houmous is natural! Adding preservatives was simply not acceptable to us.

Houmous is sociable! It is great as an individual snack or meal, but even better for sharing – so why not put it in a pack that allows for sharing? We looked for the widest pots we could find to enable sharing, dipping, and wiping, because that’s how houmous should be served!

Our environment: – We chose a fully recyclable pot, lid and label, that can be disposed of and recycled easily as ‘one’ , but even better, is fully reusable (and in our view quite a useful pot to keep!).

Our ethos is straightforward; to provide great tasting all natural global foods. To produce them without compromise and with more than just a passing thought for our consumers and our environment. We have set out to encourage and educate people about houmous and broaden their taste experience.

I really do hope you enjoy the product and that the houmous alone reveals the effort that has been put into Saz. Falafel is the traditional ‘brother’ of houmous, and it sits in our range as an accompaniment to be enjoyed with our houmous. We plan to expand the range of ‘toppings’ that we provide, as well as introducing other complementary dips and products over time.
