There is a lot more to eating houmous than as a dip with vegetables. The possibilities are endless…………..You can put it in sandwiches or wraps, serve it as part of a plated salad for yourself as a simple quick meal, or it can be dressed up as part of an elegant starter to serve to guests at a dinner party. Houmous can be eaten with equal enjoyment at all times of the year. It goes perfectly with barbequed meat in the garden in summer and equally well with a warming tagine and pita bread in the middle of winter.
Our favourite times to eat houmous……….
- In the sunshine – the perfect accompaniment at a BBQ or picnic
- As an appetiser/starter before dinner (especially when served with Saz Falafel)
- As a healthy ‘desk’ lunch at the office
- An hour before a workout – excellent energy before a good run
- Straight after a workout – to refuel energy and as a protein boost
- At a party – dip and share as a cocktail nibble, or serve as a tapas option
- Girls (or boys!) night in – much better for your waistline than ice cream and crisps!
- Movie food – Bottle of wine + DVD + Saz Houmous!
- After a night on the town – hit the houmous, not the kebabs!
- When you are starving between meals – A scoop of Saz Houmous and you’ll be happy until dinner!
and for the Kids………
- In the lunchbox as a snack for morning break, or as part of a healthy lunch
- When they get home from school to keep them happy until dinner time!
and our favourite recipes for Saz Houmous eating……….
- Ultimate Pitta/Wrap/Sandwich – Heat some original Saz Falafel (12 mins in the oven or 1 min 15 secs in the microwave). Toast your pitta (or wrap or normal bread) and fill generously with houmous. Add the hot falafel – garnish with salad leaves, chopped tomato, lemon juice – Nothing beats this traditional houmous falafel combo. With the added flavour of our delicious toppings you can really create something special. Our favourite for this recipe is Saz ‘Hot Chilli’ topped houmous.
- Jacket Potato Delight – Forget baked beans or cheese – top a piping hot jacket potato with Saz Houmous. Simply delicious. Alternatively, mix Saz Houmous in with your mashed potato (rather than cream or butter) for a fantastic flavour sensation.
- Mediterranean Salad – Why smother your salad in high fat dressings, grated cheese or salad cream – a scoop of houmous is the perfect salad topper and much tastier!
- Houmous Burger – Top your BBQ burger with a layer of delicious houmous. Or even better, forget the burger altogether and replace with some hot Saz Falafel (and more houmous!).
- Houmous Pizza/Bruscetta – Grill a sliced bruscetta or a flat pitta bread. Top generously with Saz Houmous as a ‘base’ then add your choice of additional toppings – as well as our own toppings, we like this with roasted vegetables or sundried tomatoes!
- Houmous with ground beef – Sauté some lean minced beef (hot and spicy is best) and serve as a topping on a plate of original Saz Houmous. This traditional recipe just as well with sautéed mushrooms and onions as an alternative topping.
- Endless Dipping – Traditionally houmous is ‘wiped’ rather than dipped, a custom that has not been possible in the UK due to the ‘tall’ style of houmous packaging.
With Saz’s wide flat deli pots, houmous can now be dipped, wiped and shared as it was meant to be – Here are our suggestions
- Cold sliced vegetables – carrot, cucumber, celery
- Crisps, Tortilla Chips, Pretzels
- Flat Breads, Crackers, Bread Sticks
- Pitta Breads or any other breads/loaves (always better when warmed)
- Boiled Potatoes, French fries, or Roast Potatoes (our favourite)
- Wipe straight with a separated raw onion (very traditional way of eating houmous – powerful but rewarding)
- Dip/Wipe straight with Original Saz Falafel (hot or cold!)
- Or, forget the dips; just eat it with a spoon!
and for the more adventurous?
- Houmous for breakfast – not to be frowned upon! Houmous kick-starts the metabolism and will keep you full until lunch. Houmous on toast is a great way to start the day (as seen in Sex & The City 2), as is houmous topped with boiled or oven cooked egg. This is a traditional way of eating houmous and a common breakfast in the Middle East.
- Houmous and cheese – Doesn’t sound like it should work but a houmous and Cheese Pitta/Sandwich is an excellent combination. Likewise, houmous topped with smoked salmon is fantastic!
- Houmous goes well with grilled meats (chicken in particular) so try coating your chicken with houmous (after grilling) or mix in with pan fried diced chicken.
Experiment, experience and enjoy. Life’s Tasty.
